Quarles & Brady LLP

Wisconsin member firm Quarles & Brady LLP announced that Lisa J. Acevedo has joined the firm's Chicago office as a partner in the Health Law Group.  Acevedo's arrival represents the latest addition to the Chicago office as the firm continues its expansion in the Chicago market. Quarles & Brady has added 13 attorneys to its Chicago office in 2010.

The firm announced that Michael J. Gonring, a partner and the firm's national pro bono coordinator, has been appointed to Wisconsin's Access to Justice Commission.

Valerie Bailey-Rihn, a partner in the firm's Madison office, has been elected to serve as president-elect of the Dane County Bar Association (DCBA).  She will serve as president-elect from May 2010 through May 2011, becoming President in June 2011.

John W. Daniels Jr., Chairman of the firm, is the new chair of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation Board of Directors.  The Greater Milwaukee Foundation is a family of more than 1,000 individual charitable funds, each created by donors to serve the local charitable causes of their choice.

Kathleen A. Gray, a partner in the firm's Milwaukee office, has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Waukesha County Community Foundation.  The Foundation is a pool of permanent endowment and project funds created primarily by and for the people of Waukesha County to provide grant support to charitable organizations. The intent of the Foundation is to serve a broad spectrum of community needs through grantmaking activities, management of endowment funds to ensure ongoing grant availability, and management of assets for major community projects like public art and community libraries and recreation facilities.

After a long legal battle, the firm’s client Metso Minerals has settled its trade secret theft, patent infringement and computer hacking case against its competitor FLSmidth-Excel, and several former Metso employees, for a $25 million payment.  According to David Cross, lead trial lawyer on the case, the scope of discovery in this case was staggering: more than 100 depositions; thousands of document demands, interrogatories, and requests for admissions; 400+ filings with the court.  The case involved client and opponent entities on four continents, and the team eventually became involved in satellite copyright litigation in Australia and the retention of a Chilean lawyer to testify as an expert on Chilean trade secret and employment law.  The Quarles & Brady IP Litigation Team on the case also included Johanna Wilbert and Patrick Murphy, as well as lawyers spanning Quarles & Brady's offices in Naples, Tucson, Phoenix, Madison, Chicago and Milwaukee.

The firm achieved three significant Wisconsin Supreme Court victories at the end of July.  The cases include the finding of an easement violation by a private club and subsequent trespassing. That case was successfully argued by lead attorney John Rothstein, a partner for the Firms' Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice in the Milwaukee office.  The second victory for the Firm was in its Commercial Bankruptcy, Restructuring and Creditors’ Rights practice area, and the lead attorney was Madison-office Partner Valerie Bailey-Rihn.  That case held that a beneficiary of a letter of credit can draw on the letter of credit without fear that the proceeds can be seized by a receiver if the company on whose behalf the letter of credit was given files for receivership.  The third case also was a Creditors’ Rights matter.  The Supreme Court ruled that in a foreclosure action, lenders may waive rights to a deficiency judgment against borrowers to obtain a shorter redemption period, without jeopardizing their claims against guarantors. The lead attorney on that case was Roy Prange, a partner in the Firm's Madison, Wis. office.
